Kilimanjaro Gear List This trip involves two very different climates. The first is Kilimanjaro that will take us into a very cold alpine environment. The second is the safari in Kenya. This list will provide a guideline for BOTH sections of this trip.
REQUIRED GEAR Boots- OVER THE ANKLE, Leather, Waterproof, and broken in. NO LOW TRAIL SHOES. If you arrive with something other than the Required boots you will not be permitted on the Kilimanjaro portion of the trip. It will be your financial responsibility to make other arrangements until we return to Arusha. No Exceptions, None, Ever, Don't ask. Camp shoes- For safari, running shoes are fine. The orange soil of Africa will ruin these shoes so be prepared. Socks- At least three pair, Synthetic and wool, NO COTTON. Thermal Base layers- synthetic long underwear, mid-weight is best. Gaiters- Keeps rocks and scree out of boots. Trekking Pants- 3 pair, synthetic and preferably "convertible" to shorts. Base layer shirts- 2 long sleeve, 2 short sleeve, thin synthetic shirts. Fleece Jacket- Mid-weight Waterproof-Windproof Shell Jacket with hood- This is the most critical piece of gear you will carry. North Face, Mountain Hardware, Marmot, etc. Rain Pants Liner Gloves- lightweight synthetic gloves Insulated Shell Gloves- Waterproof Fleece hat Sun Hat Balaclava Sunglasses- "wrap around" preferred, or Glacier Glasses 0 Degree Sleeping Bag Large Duffel Bag- Preferably waterproof. North Face basecamp duffel recommended. Colors other than black work best as they are easy to see and identify in airports, etc. NO ROLLING DUFFEL'S or hard-shell suitcases. TSA Luggage Locks Trekking poles- Two three section poles- REQUIRED! Day Pack- Comfortable! For carrying rain gear, gloves, snacks, water, camera, etc. Rain cover- for pack Nalgene Quart Bottles- TWO 1 Quart wide mouth nalgene bottles. Personal Hygiene Kit Bio-degradable toilet paper Camp Towel Bathing Wipes Valid Passport- With TANZANIA VISAS! Shot records- See recommended list Security Wallet Personal First Aid Kit- Moleskin, Aleve, bandaid, anti-diarrhea, etc. We carry a very well stocked EXPEDITION FIRST AID KIT. HEADLAMP- with Extra Batteries CASUAL CLOTHING FOR SAFARI LODGES Swimwear Sun Block RECOMMENDED GEAR Ear plugs Camera Extra Batteries MP3 Player (I-Pods are unreliable as there is nowhere to recharge) Journal Reading Material- There is some "down time".
